How good is your Locum?

How good is your Locum?

For many pharmacies, employing a Locum Pharmacist is essential, as it ensures they can operate and serve their communities. While the immediate priority is opening the pharmacy to maintain business continuity, factors such as experience, interpersonal skills, and team interaction often take a backseat. At first glance, this focus appears justified—after all, without opening the pharmacy, there is no business.
However, it’s worth considering the potential long-term repercussions. How many loyal customers might be lost because a Locum Pharmacist is unfamiliar with the pharmacy’s operations? How many customers and staff might disengage due to unprofessional behavior or a lack of commitment from Locums who view the role as transient? For some Locums, the detachment may stem from the fact that their responsibilities shift daily, and they may not feel accountable for the long-term success of a pharmacy.
It’s important to note that not all Locums fall into this category. Many Locums are outstanding professionals who deserve recognition for their dedication and expertise.
This raises an important question: Should the remuneration and classification of Locum Pharmacists reflect their skills, the complexity of the pharmacy’s business, and their ability to integrate with the team? Should pharmacies and Locums be evaluated based on these factors to better align expectations and outcomes?
Additionally, this conversation should not stop at Pharmacists. Pharmacy Technicians and, increasingly, Pharmacy Assistants are critical to the expansion and sustainability of the market. However, the focus seems to have shifted exclusively to short-term business gains, often overlooking the importance of patient care and a supportive work environment. Sustainable success in this industry requires looking beyond today’s sales to tomorrow’s growth, built on lasting customer relationships and trust.
Rethinking how we engage with Locum professionals could lead to more profitable and effective outcomes. Imagine a scenario where Locums are familiar with the pharmacy’s operations, its patient base, and its team dynamics. How much more value could they bring if they had a deeper understanding of their tasks and were encouraged to share their expertise? Most importantly, consider how crucial it is for patients to interact with professionals who genuinely aim to help them. Equally, think about the impact of having a Locum Pharmacist who acts as a true teammate for staff or how invaluable it would be for pharmacy owners to employ Locums who actively contribute to improving cross-selling and enhancing patient retention.
Ultimately, the critical question is this: Would you entrust the care and education of your children to just anyone, or would you seek out the very best?
Your pharmacy is like a child—it needs nurturing, guidance, and motivation to grow into a thriving, healthy, and successful entity with a bright future.
